Substantial's First Instrumental Project | LISTEN BELOW
Confession: I am the most self conscious music producer ever. I produced my first beat when I was 15 years old and never looked back. But even though I have been making instrumentals virtually nonstop for two decades, these days, I have only really shared them with my students and officially released even less.
Fast forward to 2017. In the past year or so, I have made more beats than I have written songs for the first time since I was a student at Suitland High School. I decided to embark on a mission to produce my first ever official instrumental album, entitled, 'The Garden' due to be released in Spring 2018. But before there can be a garden, we need seeds to plant. Enters the 8 track EP, 'Seeds' featuring seven instrumentals and one remix. The project consist of several old beats I produced with a few new tracks and an insane remix I was challenged to do for Tonedeff.
Intimate and laid back, this newly released contemporary hip-hop gem features visceral beats and cunning lyrics that enlighten and inspire. New songs and new arrangements of earlier songs from his recent EPs, taking listeners on a journey through the past, present and future. The Past Is Always Present In The Future cements Substantial's musical legacy as one of Maryland's proudest and most prolific sons.
TPIAPITF includes production from Oddisee, Marcus D, Mello Music Group producer, Gensu Dean, label mates The Other Guys and JSOUL, Algorythm of The Stuyvesants and Good Compny Drummer, Jon Laine. Substantial's fourth solo album also features guest appearances by QN5 Music's Tonedeff, fellow Nujabes collaborators Cise Starr of CYNE and Uyama Hiroto, GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter Wayna and more.

In these saturated times of playlists—hell, even Drake got away with the flashy marketing of calling his latest release a “playlist”—it’s a delight to find grade A selections. Enter these two playlists, curated by emcee Substantial.

"Substantial drops the video for his song 'Black Of All Trades'."
Another brilliant one from the man."

"Besides having a terrific name, ‘The Past Is Always Present In The Future’ is a breathtaking showcase of thoughtful, intelligent rap music from one of the genres most underappreciated musicians. Maryland MC Substantial has been putting the work in for nearly two decades, and his longstanding career is full of gems as it is, but as we take the first steps into 2017, it’s important that lyrical, technical skill is brought back to the forefront, and Substantial certainly provides." "It is an ode to the great things that we have to offer here in PG County and in the state of Maryland. It’s an anthem for us.
Substantial’s methodical and mature lyrics pair extremely well with the driving beat for that good head-nodding tempo."
On Friday the 13th of January 2017, Substantial's single, Made In Maryland featuring DJ Jav & Steph The Sapphic Songstress was introduced and played by the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy MC, Chuck D on WBAI 99.5 to close this episode of the weekly show. "You can call Stan “Substantial” Robinson a “thinking man’s rapper,” but that statement doesn’t accurately capture the MC’s artistry and humility. On his fourth official solo album, The Past Is Always Present In The Future, Substantial—who has taught in Prince George’s County, Maryland—has managed to craft an album that feels like a culmination of his past work, while managing to keep its lyrical themes rooted firmly in the here and now."
"Substantial is a seasoned veteran in hip hop’s ever changing tides of fads; a staple on one of hip hop’s most acclaimed indie labels HiPNOTT, Substantial has a new record to start 2017 off on the right foot. The Past Is Always Present In The Future aims to give clarity to tomorrow by recalling the collective black experiences in America (check “MLK 2.0”), as well as his own personal lessons (peep “In My Daughter’s Eyes”)."
"Substantial strings a conceptual string through the past, present and future on his new effort titled The Past Is Always Present In The Future. As per usual, substantial delivers yet another emotionally powerful body of work, mixing his life experiences, current events and much more with that oomph that makes his style unique."
