Substantial"s True EOW Stories: Pt. 2 (Sub in NYC 2/28)
In late 2003 or early 2004, EOW gave me my first solo feature at the Dub to promote my first mixtape, 'Substantial Evidence'. By this point I had parted ways with Hyde Out Productions and I was eager to shine on my own while simultaneously showing what the team (UV Ink) I had put together had to offer. I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before so with the help of my big bro, Cyra Unique a.k.a. Mr. Francois, we turned the Dub into a courtroom that night. Cyra dressed in a suit and brought his briefcase and presented 'Substantial Evidence' to show why I was Hip Hop's Best Kept Secret. I was even escorted to the stage in handcuffs... shit was epic LOL.

Over the next few weeks I'll share a few other memorable moments from End Of the Weak, leading up to my show. In the meantime, enjoy the music. Here's a random verse I thru over a beat by one of best fans/supporters the NYC underground ever had, Jersey's own Big True aka John Wellington!

Substantial"s True EOW Stories: Pt. 1 (Sub in NYC 2/28)
In the early 2000s I first started hitting up EOW and participating in their open mic ciphers and world renowned MC Challenge. On this particular day in 2001, I was on my way back from my home state of Maryland and got stuck in traffic for 7 hours, instead of my typical 4 hour trip. I roll up in The Pyramid drained, but I mustered up enough energy to place 5th in the challenge.
Afterward, I walk outside for air, a little disappointed about my performance but happy nonetheless to be amongst friends. I bump into my dude Rok One, fellow Pratt Institute Alum, who just got back from Japan and we do some catching up. The first thing he tells me is "Yo, you're everywhere!!! I was in Tokyo and saw your poster in every record store, clothing store, you name it." Instant ego boost! LOL The disappointment faded and regardless, Zoo and the fam showed love.
I get home that night, and a physical copy of my 1st album, linked below was waiting for me at the door. It was the day I knew things were about to change forever.

Remembering DJ Deckstream R.I.P.
Peace World. It has been a very rough year for Hip Hop worldwide. We've lost a lot of amazing artists. Weeks ago we lost Sean Price. In June, I lost my friend and fellow Plague member, PH (formerly known as Pumpkinhead). And last week, my former collaborator DJ Deckstream died in a traffic accident.
Instagram post below from Shing02...
When I met Jun (Nujabes) in 2000, he immediately introduced me to his production partner, DJ Deckstream, then known as Monorisick. Equally talented but very much Jun's opposite or as I'd like to think: the balance. Jun was often reserved, while Monorisick was VERY expressive. Even though he spoke very little english, he went above and beyond to converse with me using a digital Japanese to English translator. His physical comedy and oneliners made this homesick MC's weeks in Tokyo more bearable. Whether barhopping or arm wrestling before a studio session, he was always full of life and smiling.
[Left to Right] DJ Deckstream (R.I.P.), Substantial, & Nujabes (R.I.P) - January 2000 in Asakusa
I had the pleasure of making several records with him, such as 'I'll Be Back' from Sweep's Love Beats album, 'Precious Love' ft. Milka & 'Destination Sky' which was the B side to his 12" single 'Life Is Good' with Mos Def which happens to be my favorite track that he's produced.
Our biggest song together to date is 'Home Sweet Home' which people often mistake as being produced by Nujabes. He also produced More Than A Game & Kalitwutchuwon2 and a slew of remixes from my debut album, To This Union A Was Born released by Hydeout Productions in 2001.
He's also worked with a lot of amazing artists from around the world such as Lupe Fiasco, T-Boz (of TLC), Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Verbal (of m-flo), Shing02, Nikki Jean & many more.
I am blessed to have known such a talented and fun person and I'm deeply saddened by his passing. We hadn't seen each other in quite some time, but the last time I saw him he seemed to be the same funny and happy guy I remembered from the early Hydeout days, and that's how I'll always remember him.
REST IN PEACE, my friend.

[INTERVIEW] Substantial chops it up with MRC Promotions
“Build and protect your brand. Labels are constantly looking for opportunities to build and preserve their brand. You as an indie artists need to be constantly working to do the same considering that most contracts are only for two years and there’s a chance that your career may outlive your label.”

[MUSIC] P.SO & 2 Hungry Bros: Go Nuts (feat. Tanya Morgan & Substantial)
P.SO and the 2 Hungry Bros' new EP Feast of Legend drops tomorrow and to whet your appetite, we're releasing the second official single, "Go Nuts" featuring HiPNOTT recording artists Tanya Morgan (Donwill and Von Pea) and Substantial.
Feast of Legend will be a digital only release and is available for pre-order now via iTunes, Amazon, and Bandcamp.
ABOUT FEAST OF LEGEND
P.SO and the 2 Hungry Bros are more than your typical New York based MC/Producer group. Vintage vinyl fiends and food enthusiasts, the 2 Hungry Bros select only the finest samples for production in the same way a chef uses prime ingredients for his meal.
P.SO (the Earth tone King) borrows his name from the famous painter Picasso, with the intention of creating pieces of art with every new song. Together, these long time collaborators have worked on dozens of records over the past 7 years but now are ready to release their debut EP.
Prolific beats, creative lyrics and features from Tanya Morgan, Substantial, Likwuid and more, Feast of Legend will prove to be a fundamental addition to any Hip-Hop catalogue. Save room for dinner, the Feast is upon us.
